IHS Markit Global Sector PMI™
Sep 2017

Technology regains top spot in global sector rankings

Abstract

Key findings:

  • Strongest rise in hi-tech output in nearly three years
  • Pharmaceuticals & biotechnology is fastest-growing detailed sector
  • Autos output falls in August

The latest set of IHS Markit Global Sector PMI™ data signalled stronger growth of output across many sectors in August, with seven out of eight broad segments seeing upticks in growth since July. The technology sector was the fastest-growing area of the global economy for the fourth time in five months, having briefly lost top spot to industrials in July. The only broad sector to see slower growth was financials.

Within technology, software & services and technology equipment posted faster rates of expansion, notably in the former. The sectors were ranked fourth and fifth out of 23 sectors monitored at the most detailed level.

Output growth in the industrials sector was driven by general industrials and commercial & professional services, which were ranked second and third respectively. A comparatively modest rise in activity was seen in transportation, ranked twentieth in the latest table.

Pharmaceuticals & biotechnology was the fastest-growing detailed sector in August. In contrast, automobiles & auto parts was the only segment monitored to post declining output.
