IHS Markit Global Sector PMI™

IHS Markit

IHS Markit Global Sector PMI™
Feb 2018

Technology remains top of global rankings in January

Abstract

Key findings:

  • Fastest  rise  in  hi-tech  business  activity since December 2013
  • Record increase in beverages production
  • Metals & mining posts slowest output growth of all sectors

The first batch of IHS Markit Global Sector PMI™ data for 2018 signalled that global technology output continued to expand sharply in January. The rate of growth in the sector was the strongest since December 2013. The acceleration reflected the manufacturing component, technology equipment, as software & services activity grew at an unchanged rate since December.

At the detailed level, beverages topped the output growth rankings in January with the fastest expansion since the series was first compiled in October 2009. The next-fastest growing sectors during the month were technology equipment, other financials, machinery & equipment and household & personal use products respectively.

The weakest rate of expansion was registered in metals & mining, where growth moderated to the slowest since July 2017. Nevertheless, the current 16-month sequence of expansion is the longest since the global sector data started in October 2009.
