Jun 2018

Strongest growth in broad industrials sector in over three years in May

Abstract

Key findings:

  • Industrials posts strongest rise in output among eight broad groups monitored
  • Within this group, commercial & professional services sees sharp growth
  • Metals & mining is only sector to record lower production

The latest IHS Markit Global Sector PMITM data signalled that business activity in the wide-ranging industrials sector increased at the strongest rate in over three years in May. This was enough to offset slightly weaker rates of expansion in the seven remaining broad sectors monitored, among which technology was the fastest-growing.

The industrials group covers a wide range of sub-sectors, including construction materials, machinery & equipment, general industrials, commercial & professional services and transportation. Of these, commercial & professional services registered the strongest expansion, and the fastest growth among all detailed sectors monitored.

The next-strongest growing sectors at the detailed level were beverages, tourism & recreation, transportation and software & services
respectively. At the other end of the league table, metals & mining registered lower output for the second month in a row, albeit only a fractional rate of decline.
